Most poison emergencies in Iowa don’t happen in laboratories or industrial settings, they happen at home.

As National Poison Prevention Week (March 15–21, 2026) approaches, the Iowa Poison Control Center (IPCC) is urging families to save the Poison Help number, 1-800-222-1222, and call first when something unexpected happens.

In addition to the 24/7 phone line, Iowans can now also connect with poison experts through a new online chat feature available on the IPCC website, offering another convenient way to get immediate help when a poisoning emergency occurs.

In FY2025, the IPCC managed 23,769 poisoning cases across all 99 Iowa counties. More than half - 55.1% - involved children and teens. The Poison Center also recorded a high of 53,308 follow-up calls, reflecting the increasing complexity of poisoning cases in the state.

“Many parents assume they need to rush to the emergency room,” said Linda Kalin, RN, BS, CSPI, Executive Director of the IPCC. “But nearly 90% of poison exposure calls can be safely managed at home with expert guidance. Calling or chatting with poison specialists first can reduce stress, save time, and avoid unnecessary medical visits.”

The most common exposure category in Iowa is pain relievers, medications found in nearly every household. Other common exposures include antidepressants, sedatives, cardiovascular medications, and household cleaning products.

Without access to the Poison Center, 78% of callers report they would have gone directly to an emergency department. By providing immediate expert assessment and follow-up care, the IPCC saves Iowans at least $15.7 million annually in healthcare costs.
