Why Alcohol Poisoning Is a Serious Risk for Kids

Alcohol poisoning can happen quickly and is especially dangerous for children. Kids are naturally curious and often imitate adults – sometimes by sipping from unattended glasses or tasting household products that contain alcohol. Even small amounts can cause serious health problems in young children.

Common Sources of Alcohol Poisoning in the Home

Alcohol isn’t just found in beer, wine, and liquor. Many common household items contain high concentrations of alcohol and can be just as dangerous if ingested by children:

  • Leftover alcoholic drinks: Cocktails, wine glasses, and punch bowls left within reach after gatherings are a frequent source of accidental poisoning, especially during holidays.
  • Personal care products: Perfume, cologne, aftershave, mouthwash, and hand sanitizer often contain high percentages of alcohol.
  • Baking extracts: Vanilla and almond extracts can have alcohol concentrations similar to hard liquor.
  • Medicines and cleaning products: Some over-the-counter medicines and household cleaners also contain alcohol.

Symptoms of Alcohol Poisoning in Children

Children are much more sensitive to alcohol than adults. Even small amounts can lead to:

  • Vomiting
  • Confusion or drowsiness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Seizures
  • Low blood sugar, which can cause coma or death

If you suspect your child has swallowed any alcohol, do not wait for symptoms to appear. Call the Iowa Poison Control Center right away at 1-800-222-1222.

How to Prevent Alcohol Poisoning in Kids

  • Clean up immediately: After parties or gatherings, empty all glasses, cups, and punch bowls right away. Don’t leave drinks where kids can reach them.
  • Store alcohol safely: Keep bottles of liquor, wine, and beer locked up or out of reach, just like you would with medicines.
  • Be mindful of non-drink products: Store perfumes, extracts, hand sanitizers, and other alcohol-containing products securely.
  • Teach children: Explain that some liquids can look like juice or water but are very dangerous to drink.
