SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Iowa Poison Control Center is celebrating their 25th anniversary this month. When they first began, they operated just one help line in a small space inside St. Lukes Hospital in Sioux City.

They have now expanded to more than 20 trained medical professionals including physicians, nurses and pharmacists, all trained in toxicology. They say the biggest misconception is that they only help babies or kids, but they in fact serve people of all ages, including senior citizens who may have made an error while taking their medication.

“This isn’t just a job, it’s a calling. I remember those first days, helping people in crisis with nothing but a phone and our medical training. Now, 25 years later, our team has grown, technology has changed, but our purpose remains the same: to be here for Iowans, anytime they need us. We’re deeply grateful to everyone – healthcare professionals, first responders, families, and supporters who has been a part of this journey," said Linda Kalin, Executive Director and founding voice of the IPCC.

They handle 23,000 cases a year and make 50,000 follow ups to go along with it.
