The new school year is here! As families in Iowa adjust to new schedules, busy mornings, and after-school activities, it’s the perfect time to revisit safety at home. While backpacks, lunches, and homework may be top of mind, poison prevention should be on every parent’s checklist. The Iowa Poison Control Center (IPCC) is here to help with these simple, practical tips.

1. Keep Medications Out of Reach

Whether it’s prescriptions for your child, over-the-counter pain relievers, or vitamins, medications can be harmful if taken the wrong way.

  • Store all medicines in a locked cabinet, not in purses, counters, or easily opened drawers.

  • Always use the original packaging with child-resistant caps.

  • Teach kids that medicine is not candy, even if it tastes sweet.

👉 Did you know? More than 50% of poison center calls involve children under six.

2. Safe Snacks and Lunches

Back-to-school means packed lunches, after-school snacks, and sports treats.

  • Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold to prevent foodborne illness.

  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly.

  • Teach kids never to share food if they’re unsure about ingredients—especially important for allergies.

3. Sports & Activity Safety

With practices and games underway, sports-related products can bring risks:

  • Store muscle rubs, energy supplements, and electrolyte powders safely.

  • Remind teens that energy drinks or pre-workout powders can cause dangerous side effects if overused.

  • Encourage hydration with water first.

4. Cleaning Products and School Projects

School assignments often involve art supplies, glues, or cleaners.

  • Supervise use of household cleaners or chemicals for projects.

  • Store them away immediately after use.

  • Choose non-toxic supplies when possible.

5. Be Prepared: Save the Poison Help Number

Accidents happen, even in the most careful homes. That’s why the Iowa Poison Control Center is available 24/7 to answer questions and provide expert help.
